A delayed recognition

After 30 years, Danish UN soldiers posted in Iraq receive their medal.
A delayed recognition

The UN Special Services medal

Danish UN soldiers posted in Iraq in 1991-1999 as part of the UN mission "United Nations Guard Contingent in Iraq" (UNGCI) were not eligible for a medal at the time, because they were deployed by the Danish Foreing Ministry.
The purpose of the mission was to support and protect the flow of international humanitarian aid for the Iraqi people following the liberation of Kuwait.
The mission ended in 2003.

The Danish veterans' association "Danske Veteraner" has since worked to make up for the lacking recognition, and the soldiers will now receive the UN Special Services medal. This medal is awarded for missions that do not have their own specific UN medal.
