As part of the president's state visit, Al-Sisi was awarded the Danish Order of the Elephant on the first day of the visit. It was part of the traditional exchange of orders between sovereigns and heads of state. Thus, King Frederik was awarded the highest class of the Egyptian Order of the Nile.
The Order of the Nile became Egypt's highest ranking order when the Republic of Egypt was formed in 1953.

Al-Sisi is not the first high ranking Egyptian, who has been awarded the Order of the Elephant.
Back in 1859, Prince Muhammad Ali Pasha was given the order on May 16th.
A few years later - on January 15th, 1871 - the order was also bestowed upon Egyptian viceroy Ismail Pasha.
King Fuad received the Order of the Elephant on November 4th, 1932, and president Mubarak on February 19th, 1986.
