The first Danish king to receive the Grand Cross was Frederik VI in 1808. Four years later, Crown Prince Christian (later King Christian VIII) was also awarded the Grand Cross.
When Prince Frederik (later King Frederik VII) married Princess Wilhelmine in 1828, he too received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.
Prince Christian (later King Christian IX) traveled to Paris in 1858 to pay tribute to Emperor Napoléon III, who had survived an assassination attempt the same year. On that occasion he received the Grand Cross of the order.
Crown Prince Frederik (later King Frederik VIII) was awarded the Grand Cross in 1866 as a symbol of the deep respect and unwavering friendship between France and Denmark.
Following the same pattern, Christian X received the Grand Cross in 1891 as Crown Prince.
Frederik IX was awarded the Grand Cross in 1917 as Crown Prince. Queen Ingrid was awarded the Grand Cross when the royal couple visited France in 1950.
Queen Margrethe II received the Grand Cross when she and Prince Henrik visited France in 1978, and the Price was awarded the Grand Cross of the French National Order of Merit at the same occasion. In 1984 Prince Henrik received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor.
